Rockville Science Day 2017

We gave away more than 600 science related books.

We met many exhibitors and had some new volunteers.

All of the books were taken before the end of the event.

In the future, we will be providing the books directly to Rockville Science Center and they will distribute the science related books for this event and the many events they distribute science books to throughout the year.  Relationships like this are key.

Just yesterday, we facilitated the Rockville Science Center obtaining remaining science books from the AAUW book sale at Asbury Methodist Village.

Our goal is to help community organizations which distribute books network to help themselves.

Book Collection And Distribution Activities

This Saturday, March 3rd we will assess the library at Chase Partnership House , managed by Catholic Charities.   It is our goal to help pull out the stale reading materials and stock the shelves with fresh materials. This will be done at the direction of the Program Director,  Kassaye Moges

On Sunday, we will pick up remainder books from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, MD.

When we pick up remainders from a book sale, we typically have a long pick list.
This weekend we will select books for:

Manna Food Bank (kids books, which are made available to food recipients)
Rockville Science Day (science related books)
Catholic Charities (kids books)
Mary's Center (Baby Books)
Chase Partnership House (books on various reading levels and a wide variety of interest).
We are always establishing new pick lists.  Please email: Velocity of Books if you have a special request.

The books not selected for our pick lists are given to Discover Books. . Discover books gives us a nominal amount of money (paid by weight) for the books. We are grateful for the funds, which go to pay for travel expenses and insurance.  Discover Books sells many of the books we donate to them on the Internet.  Discover Books donates all the books we've ever asked them for.   To date, this is more than 60,000 books.

It's important to note that some of the books provided to Discovery Books end up going to pulp, but we try to eliminate the pulping by getting as many books back out to the community as possible.  You can help by identifying needs for books in your community.

Meeting with Community & Business Development Manager of Bethesda Barnes and Noble

We met with Rebecca Maguire, Community & Business Development Manager at Barnes and Noble  Bethesda, Maryland store.

We discussed community reading events, summer reading initiatives and the importance of print reading logs.

This September Velocity of Books is hosting Gareth Hinds at Barnes and Noble.  In addition to the amazing Gareth Hinds, we will also have music, games, prizes, as well as mystery guests.

Please check back for dates and times.

Catholic Charities - A Great Community Partner for Promoting Literacy

Catholic Charities is always eager to accept book donations.  This particular facility focuses on families with young children.

As a result of donations from our community and Discover Books, we are able to bring them plenty of books.
