Westfiled Wheaton Summer Reading Kick-off

Velocity of Books will set up bookshelves at Westfield Wheaton on the week of May 1, 2017

The books shelves will be stocked and a sign will be displayed inviting guests to take books

On June 17th, 2017 Velocity of Books will host an event giving away more than 20,000 books.
This event has the support of Maryland Governor Hogan's Office.
There will be music, games and prizes at the event.

There will be free standing libraries donated by the community. The libraries will be full of free books, which the mall visitors will be encouraged to take.

There will be flyers promoting the Barnes and Noble and Montgomery County Public Library summer reading initiatives.

Throughout the summer, the bookshelves will continue to be filled by volunteers, to provide constant access to books of interest.

It is anticipated that visitors will come from throughout the state of Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia to get the free books throughout the summer.

The goal is to give away more than 100,000 books by the end of the summer, which will show good will and substantially increase the visitors to the mall.
Velocity of Books acknowledges that when the Westfield realizes an increase in foot traffic as a result of our efforts, they are more likely to expand programs like ours to their other malls.

Rockville Science Day 2017

We gave away more than 600 science related books.

We met many exhibitors and had some new volunteers.

All of the books were taken before the end of the event.

In the future, we will be providing the books directly to Rockville Science Center and they will distribute the science related books for this event and the many events they distribute science books to throughout the year.  Relationships like this are key.

Just yesterday, we facilitated the Rockville Science Center obtaining remaining science books from the AAUW book sale at Asbury Methodist Village.

Our goal is to help community organizations which distribute books network to help themselves.

Book Collection And Distribution Activities

This Saturday, March 3rd we will assess the library at Chase Partnership House , managed by Catholic Charities.   It is our goal to help pull out the stale reading materials and stock the shelves with fresh materials. This will be done at the direction of the Program Director,  Kassaye Moges

On Sunday, we will pick up remainder books from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, MD.

When we pick up remainders from a book sale, we typically have a long pick list.
This weekend we will select books for:

Manna Food Bank (kids books, which are made available to food recipients)
Rockville Science Day (science related books)
Catholic Charities (kids books)
Mary's Center (Baby Books)
Chase Partnership House (books on various reading levels and a wide variety of interest).
We are always establishing new pick lists.  Please email: Velocity of Books if you have a special request.

The books not selected for our pick lists are given to Discover Books. . Discover books gives us a nominal amount of money (paid by weight) for the books. We are grateful for the funds, which go to pay for travel expenses and insurance.  Discover Books sells many of the books we donate to them on the Internet.  Discover Books donates all the books we've ever asked them for.   To date, this is more than 60,000 books.

It's important to note that some of the books provided to Discovery Books end up going to pulp, but we try to eliminate the pulping by getting as many books back out to the community as possible.  You can help by identifying needs for books in your community.
